Praça Floriano, also known as Cinelândia is the main public square in Rio de Janeiro’s city centre. Named after Brazil’s second president Floriano Peixoto (pictured, on top of the podium), this square is at its liveliest when city workers are having lunch and also when they are socialising after work. At busy times, the square is home to samba musicians and groups of friends enjoying the outdoor cafes. The entire city centre including the square can seem deserted on public holidays such as new years day as most buildings and offices are closed
