The lagoon is located in the upmarket neighbourhood of Lagoa (which translates to lagoon in Portuguese). Lagoa is one of the most expensive neighbourhoods to live in South America and also one of the only areas in Rio de Janeiro that doesn’t have a favela (slum). Connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a canal, the lagoon is named after Rodrigo de Freitas de Carvalho, a Portuguese army official who inherited a vast amount of land surrounding the lagoon from his wife
