For over a century, Joe's Stone Crab has been serving South Beach residents and visitors with seafood feasts, making it an iconic and beloved establishment in Miami Beach. In 1913, Joe Weiss - born in Hungary - made the move from New York to Miami Beach. Five years later he opened the doors of his eatery, "Original Joe's Restaurant". Situated within the front room of a bungalow that he shared with his wife Jennie on Biscayne Street, it marked an exciting new chapter for this enterprising couple. Three years after opening (in 1921), an ichthyologist stumbled upon the abundant supply of stone crabs in the region and brought some to Joe to determine whether they could be safely eaten. When the ichthyologist asked Weiss why his restaurant wasn't offering stone crabs, he replied that no one would want them. However, they soon discovered this assumption was wrong after they cooked their first batch. Joe's is a major player in the Florida stone crab industry, dictating wholesale prices and providing a major source of income to many of its crabbers. Although today this restaurant is known for its succulent stone crab dishes, fish was their primary offering shortly after opening. Since its inception, Joe's Stone Crab has been a hotspot among notorious figures like Al Capone, who would frequent the restaurant for dinner every day at 5 pm. Today, it remains an attraction to politicians, actors and athletes alike. The restaurant was featured in the 1985 film The Mean Season before its mid-1980s remodelling, and it garnered even more fame after appearing in Big Trouble starring Tim Allen. There's Something About Mary also mentioned this incredible place while The Golden Girls frequently referenced it throughout their series. Joe's Stone Crab offers a selection of dishes such as Mahi Mahi, New York Strip Steak and their world-renowned Stone Crabs. However, please remember that Joe’s is only open seasonally between October and May! Even though it operates for just 8 months every year, this restaurant still managed to generate the highest revenue among all independent restaurants in the US - with an astonishing $38.4 million in 2019!
