The 1,300 foot high Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) is located on a peninsula that sticks out into the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain earned its name in the 16th century from the Portuguese, who used to transport blocks of sugar in cone-shaped molds during the height of the sugar cane trade. A cable car system connects visitors on the ground from Vermelha Beach to Morro da Urca (the shorter mountain), and then from Morro da Urca to Sugarloaf Mountain (the higher mountain)
